On the ecology of Lophodermium piceae, a needle endophyte of Norway spruce

چکیده

The significance of endophytic needle infections to Norway spruce is still largely unsolved. Lophodermium piceae is the most common species representing typically over 90 % of the cultivable isolates obtained from surface sterilized needles. Generally, more than 50 % of the needles are infected with this species and single healthy looking needles can accommodate several, even more than 30 individual infections, while still looking green and healthy (Müller et al. 2001). The foliage of Norway spruce (Picea abies) is noteworthy resistant against herbivores and diseases in North Europe as compared to needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Interestingly, Scots pine needles are not colonized with any single dominating endophyte species similarly as needles of Norway spruce. Therefore, it appears intriguing to find out if resistance of Norway spruce needles against herbivores and diseases is mediated by L. piceae.

Nutrient Dynamics and Decomposition rate of Norway Spruce Needles in Stråsan and Lajim stands

Climate changes due to changes in a habitat leads to differences in the rate of decomposition and nutrient dynamics of leaflitters, which has many effects on the controlling factors of the decomposition process. In the present study, the rate of decomposition and nutrient dynamics of Norway spruce was evaluated for 363 days in the two forestation sites in the natural and foreign habitats, ...

A fungal endophyte of black spruce (Picea mariana) needles is also an aquatic hyphomycete.

An aquatic hyphomycete, Dwayaangam sp., was isolated from superficially sterilized black spruce (Picea mariana) needles submerged in aerated water in a small glass chamber (microcosm). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence of this fungus and of a commonly encountered foliar endophyte isolated from P. mariana showed a high degree of similarity. When sporulation was induced in the microc...

Effects of prolonged drought on the anatomy of sun and shade needles in young Norway spruce trees

Predicted increases in the frequency and duration of drought are expected to negatively affect tree vitality, but we know little about how water shortage will influence needle anatomy and thereby the trees' photosynthetic and hydraulic capacity. In this study, we evaluated anatomical changes in sun and shade needles of 20-year-old Norway spruce trees exposed to artificial drought stress. Canopy...

Ergosterol as a Biochemical Indicator of Fungal Infection in Spruce and Fir Needles from Different Sources

Different fungi are discussed to play a certain role in recent spruce decline in addition to different abiotic factors such as S 0 2, photooxidants (ozone) or unfavourable climatic conditions. Thus, ergosterol as a specific fungal sterol was used as a biochemical indicator for fungal infection in differently damaged spruce and fir needles. With its aid it could be demonstrated that the importan...

The decomposition of leaf litter has important in the ecosystem level through regulating buildup of soil organic matter, regulating of nutrient for plant growth and influencing the flux of Co2 from the soil. Several studies have introduced Home-field advantage (HFA) as an index for indicating more rapidly decomposition process of litter in its own site. In the present study, beech and alder s...
